What does it mean to eat unhealthy (Part VI)

by Oana

The first step to proper nutrition, whether we want to adopt a gluten and dairy free diet, eat less sugar, in general to be aware of what we put in our mouths, is to cut out processed foods. Let’s buy natural ingredients to cook our own food. I can already see some of you scowling at me. Let’s see what would be the reasons why we still eat processed food.

  1. I don’t know how to cook. In the age of Google, with thousands of recipes written, filmed, explained, can we still say that? There’s no need to make coq au vin or who knows what complication, for a grill with sauteed vegetables and salad and an apple pie you don’t need a culinary degree.
  2. I don’t have time. With a little research and planning, you can prepare a wonderful dinner in minutes or a packed lunch. You just have to want to. Or you make time for doctor’s appointments later.
  3. It would mean staying in the kitchen all the time. I’m not tired saying: we eat too much. And too often. If we had 2 meals a day and possibly a snack and ate a reasonable amount, we would need one loaf every 7-10 days per person, that means making 2 loaves once a week for 2 people. This is just an example. Learn how to store food so you can enjoy it as much as possible. I repeat, you only have to want, and you will find the way.
  4. It’s too expensive. Well… how should I say it to be understood… It’s not. Buy the perishable ingredients from the Farmer’s Market, not the supermarket, and the non-perishables online, not from physical health food stores (sorry to say this, I know people work in these stores, but the same product is 30% to 100% more expensive there compared to online stores).
  5. I don’t like to cook. You probably also don’t like other activities we do every day: brushing your teeth, showering, going to work, etc. You know what they say: if it’s a must, with pleasure. You can associate cooking with eating, that is: I don’t cook, I don’t eat. I go to the supermarket to visit, to marvel at how many “inedible” things there are in my mind: sweets, drinks, sausages, pasta, sauces, flours…
  6. I like to eat at restaurants. No one says to stop going to restaurants, even to order food at home. But let it not be the rule, but the exception. No one is holy, I’ve never seen anyone with a halo shining above their head, sure we can consume processed crap sometimes. But let it be clear in our heads that we do not do this frequently.
