GREEN SMOOTHIE OR HOW I QUIT COFFEE

by Oana

Since yesterday I gave up coffee and sugar. So today I’m a sore, constipated zombie moving around on replay. We don’t even know how many addictions we accumulate throughout life until we try to get rid of them. I was drinking 3 caffeinated drinks a day. Weak, indeed, but constant. A large coffee in the morning, a cappuccino with cocoa at lunch, a small coffee in the evening… These drinks were the main source of daily sugar. Half a teaspoon of raw sugar for each serving. I don’t eat sweets every day and only made by myself, with a minimum amount of sugar. I can say, compared to other people, that I eat very little sugar.

And yet the withdrawal is already felt, just 24 hours after the last coffee and implicitly, the last portion of sugar. For now it feels like a void, like I’m missing something. I want to follow Dr. Amy Myers’ Autoimmune Diet and implement the changes one at a time. This excludes gluten, dairy, legumes, grains of any kind, nightshades, sugar, alcohol, eggs and all processed meats. As I document, I implement the changes. Now I want to show you what I replaced the coffee with, a good-tasting, dense and unctuous “greenie”, with which I got along well from the first sip.

    Ingredients (for 2 servings)

    • A good handful of raw spinach
    • A sprig of parsley
    • One medium carrot
    • A small piece of zucchini
    • 2 dates
    • Half a teaspoon of cinnamon
    • One teaspoon of coconut oil
    • A teaspoon of flax seed oil
    • 350 milliliters of warm water

    Method of preparation

We put all the ingredients in the smoothie maker (we keep 100 milliliters of water to clean the last drops of drink from the blender jar). It doesn’t have the quality of giving you instant energy like coffee, but the taste makes up for it. That’s about it for today. I’m going to growl unfriendly at my cat and dogs.
